Folio Friday - Joo Sam Son
We would like to introduce the very talented Joo Sam Son from the USA. He is a 3D artist specializing in realistic military vehicles. In addition to being an aspiring Mech Pilot, Joo Sam has spent the last few years working props and tanks for Armored Warfare. Creating some of the finest realistic tanks has given Sam a chance to hone his skills and speed up his workflow with handy scripts. We asked Sam some questions about his workflow and job, and advice for new artists who wish to follow in his path:
What do you do most of at work?
I do everything related to the art creation of tanks. High and low poly modeling, UVs, baking, texturing, LODs, and damage states.
What is the most interesting thing you've learned in the studio environment?
It would have to be texturing. Before I was used to the basic sets of maps: albedo, spec, gloss, and normal. But when I started working on the tanks, I learned a lot about how the different channels are used to get the look that we want in the engine. I use TexTools to get quick maps and to separate smoothing by UV groups. XrayUnwrapper's live unwrapping has been real helpful in getting unwrapping done faster.
Are there any plugins or extra tools that make your workflow easier?

Any advice for artists incoming into the industry?
It's cliche but set a goal of the kind of cool stuff you'd like to be making then get to work. Compare yourself to what you were yesterday, are you better? If no, keep going. If yes, keep going. Don't forget to share what you create and be open to critique. That's about it, good luck!
Be sure to follow Sam Son’s art station, and don’t forget to drop him and like and say tanks!
